History of The Cattle Herders(पशुपालन इतिहास)
Beginning in the upper reaches of the Nile River in the southern portions
of the present-day nation of Sudan, and expanding over the centuries from
north to south across the rift valleys and plains of East and southern Africa,
yet another major variant of pastoral nomadism developed. In this vast and
varied expanse, warrior-dominated societies based on cattle herding coalesced and expanded.
Because the climate and especially the disease environment posed
major barriers to horse breeding, the cattle nomads migrated, hunted, and
fought their wars on foot. But cattle provided their sustenance and the basis
of their material culture. Cattle were the prime gauge of wealth and status,
the focus of religious rituals, and the key item given to the bride's family
in arranging a marriage alliance.

About 108 clans(108 कुळ/कुल) of Dhangars and 22 sub castes (22 पोट जाती).

There are total 108 exogamous groups (clans) of Dhangars found all over India.These clans found Three and half main sub divisions due to division of labour among brothers of one family(एक ही परिवार के सदस्यो में काम का विभाजन हो गया).These are Shepherds(Hatti/Hatkar,Pal,Kuru/Kuruba,Gadariya etc..),Cow herders/Ahir (Yadu and Gawali) or Buffalo keepers(Mahaskar/Gurjar/Gujjar) and wool and blanket weavers (Khutekar,Sangar and Shegar).The half division is butchers(Khatik).All sub sects fall in either of these division.The number three and half is not random selection but has a religious and cosmological significance.
