In Maharashtra just the way Marathas are Nagvanshis same way Mahars are also Nagvanshis. Mahars too is a marshal race. They are also fighters. Brahmin considers mahars too as its great foe. Aryans and Mahars have fought bloody wars. That’s how Marathas and Mahars have common surnames.Mulnivasis (Original inhabitant) have their ‘Kuls’ while Aryans have their ‘gotras’.

There are total 108 exogamous groups (clans) of Dhangars found all over India.These clans found Three and half main sub divisions due to division of labour among brothers of one family(एक ही परिवार के सदस्यो में काम का विभाजन हो गया).These are Shepherds(Hatti/Hatkar,Pal,Kuru/Kuruba,Gadariya etc..),Cow herders/Ahir (Yadu and Gawali) or Buffalo keepers(Mahaskar/Gurjar/Gujjar) and wool and blanket weavers (Khutekar,Sangar and Shegar).The half division is butchers(Khatik).All sub sects fall in either of these division.The number three and half is not random selection but has a religious and cosmological significance.
