King Yashodharman (Vikramaditya) of the Malwa:Victory over Huna

सम्राट विक्रमादित्य (यशोधर्मन्) की इक्कीस राज्यों पर विजय

यशोधर्मन् छठी शताब्दी के आरम्भिक काल में मालवा के सम्राट थे। छठी शती ई0 के द्वितीय चरण में मालवा प्रांत के स्थानीय शासक के रूप से आगे बढ़कर यशोधर्मन् पूरे उत्तरी भारत पर छा गया। उसका उदय उल्कापात की भाँति तीव्र गति से हुआ था और उसी की भाँति बिना अधिक स्पष्ट प्रभाव छोड़े वह इतिहास से लुप्त हो गया(क्योंकि इतिहास की तिथियाँ गलत है) I

The 4th century CE Sanskrit poet Kalidasa(Kalidasa Second) credits Vikramaditya of Malwa with having conquered about twenty one kingdoms, both in and outside India, including the kingdoms of Parasikas, the Hunas, the Kambojas, tribes located in the west and east Oxus valleys, the Kinnaras, Kiratas etc.

यशोधर्मन की उत्पत्ति और प्रारंभिक इतिहास के विषय में कुछ नहीं ज्ञात है।वाकाटकों और हूणों के आक्रमण के कारण मालवा की राजनीतिक दशा अस्थिर थी। ऐसे में यशोधर्मन् जैसे महत्वाकांक्षी और योग्य व्यक्ति के लिये अपना प्रभाव बढ़ाना सरल था।

यशोधर्मन् का दूसरा नाम विष्णुवर्धन था। वह शिव का भक्त था। अभिलेख में उसके अच्छे शासन और उसके सदगुणों के कई उल्लेख हैं। उसकी तुलना मनु, भरत, अलर्क और मांधाता से की गई है। कि अपने समय में ही उसे विशेष गौरव प्राप्त हुआ था।

The victory of Yasodharman is mentioned in the sentence “Ajay Jarto Hunan” in the grammar of Chandra of the sixth century. This mention in the phrase sentence अजय जर्टो हुणान or “ Ajay Jarto Huṇān ”, refers to the defeat of Huns by the Jats under the leadership of Yasodharman.

Three inscriptions of Yasodharman have been found in Mandsaur. One of these is of samvat 589 (532 AD). Yasodharman had acquired the title of Vikramaditya. The Kashmiri poet Kalhana has mentioned about three Kalidasas. The second Kalidasa, who wrote the books 'Raguvansha' and 'Jyotirvidabharan', was court poet of Yasodharman. According to some analysts, Kalidasa has mentioned the victories of Yasodharman as 'Raghu-digvijaya'. His pillars claim that his rule extended from Himalayas in the north to Travancore in south, although that seems rather unlikely. The ruler of Magadha had become his friend.
